The Toronto Society offers a three-semester program in Coatings Technology. The course is designed to provide theoretical basics of the coatings technology for young people who are just entering the industry, or who have been working in the industry for some time but who want to upgrade their status in the industry by earning a Diploma in Coatings Technology. In view of the complexity of most industrial coatings, the course is also recommended to industrial paint applicators who need to be able to appreciate the composition, performance capabilities and handling of the products they purchase and use. Other persons, involved in a non-technical capacity such as purchasing of raw materials, production scheduling, sales or marketing, who may not be interested in the Certificate as such, and do not need to sit for the examinations, are often enrolled in only one semester of particular interest to them.

THE PROGRAM

Each of the three semesters consists of 14 sessions, of which 12 are actual lectures, and two are examinations. The cost is $550 per student per semester and includes a textbook for each of the semesters. The classes are currently held at the Mississauga Central Library in downtown Mississauga, once a week from 6:30 - 9:00 PM. Fall session begins in September and Winter session in January. No classes are held in the summer.

The lectures in the first semester are all on raw materials used by the coatings industry. Chemistry, manufacturing and testing of these materials is discussed, emphasis being placed on how these products are delivered to the coatings industry and the choices available to the formulating chemists. The following are the topics covered:

Chemistry for Organic Coatings
Oils and Varnishes/Alkyd Resins
Epoxy, Phenolics and Silicone Resins
Acrylics, Urethanes and Cellulosics
Solvents
Water-borne Resins and Emulsions
Coatings Additives
White and Extender Pigments
Organic Pigments
Black and Inorganic Pigments

In the second semester the discussion is focused on how the above raw materials are used to formulate various types of protective and decorative coatings. Selection of materials, testing and manufacturing of trade sales paints is dealt with by covering the following subjects:

Review of Trade Sales Paint Resins
Coatings Calculations
Dispersion Process and Equipment
Pigments and Tinting Systems
Instrumental Colour Matching
Oil Based Formulations
Formulating Latex Paints (two lectures)
Special Formulating Know-how
Manufacturing Methods
Exterior Durability
Quality Control

The third semester lectures covers the following topics:

Review of Resins for Industrial Coatings
Corrosion
Surface Preparation and Primers
Pigments, Dispersion and Equipment
Automotive Coatings (OEM)
Automotive Refinish Coatings
Coil and General Industrial Coatings
Environmental and Government Regulations
Powder Coatings
Application Methods and Equipment (powder)
Application Methods and Equipment (liquid)
Statistical Process and Quality
